The renowned and respected diplomat Harold Nicolson called the participation of politicians in negotiation a "dangerous innovation" that could arouse public expectation, lead to misunderstandings, and create confusion".
I never really understood this until the rise of Trump and Duterte. It is so natural to see our leaders attend to foreign matters. At times, they have been awkward. From Khrushchev's reported shoe slamming at the UN to George W. Bush's difficult meet and greets. But never have they been so bad! Just a few examples are enough.
Duterte and Trump are the epitome of Nicolson's difficult politician. I really wonder what will happen if Trump comes to power and the two actually meet... I pity the diplomats around the globe dealing with today's politicians.
